Getting started

Do I need an account?

No. Open Malai and start. Nothing asks for your name or email.

Can I try it without my own data?

Yes. Choose See it with sample data on the home page, or try sample data when the app first opens. It loads four months for a made-up person, clearly marked. You can clear it, and it removes only the sample rows.

Where do I get a statement?

From your bank’s netbanking or app, usually under Accounts, then Statements. Pick the months you want and download a PDF, Excel or CSV file.

Do I install anything?

Not on the web. If your browser offers to install Malai, say yes: it opens faster and works offline. On iPhone, use Share, then Add to Home Screen, which also protects your data from Safari clearing it.

Statements

The PDF asks for a password

Banks often lock statements, commonly with some mix of your name, birth date or customer ID. The bank’s email usually says which. Malai asks for it, uses it to open the file on your device, and never stores it.

It says it needs to know the columns

Malai couldn’t tell which column is which, so it shows you the file’s first rows. Point out the date, description, amounts and balance. It never makes up rows.

It says it can’t read the file

Scanned PDFs have no text in them for Malai to read. Download the CSV or Excel version from your bank if you can.

What do New, Needs review, Transfers and Already imported mean?

New rows are ready to save. Needs review means Malai isn’t sure of the tag. Transfers are card bills, your own accounts and ATM cash, which aren’t counted as spending. Already imported rows are ones Malai has from an earlier file or a text, and are left unticked.

I imported the wrong file

Open Settings, then import history, and undo it. That removes exactly the rows from that file.

What the numbers mean

Why doesn’t a card bill count as spending?

Because you already counted what you bought when you swiped the card. Counting the bill too would count it twice. Transfers, card bills, cash withdrawals, investments, income, loans and EMI aren’t counted by default. You can change that for any tag in Settings, or for one row in its sheet.

What is “came in with no text”?

Malai compares your balance from one text to the next. If the balance is higher than the texts explain, money arrived without a text. It shows you how much and asks who it was from. It’s worked out, so it can be wrong when a text is late: leave it or name it.

What is “small spends with no text”?

The same check, for small debits your bank didn’t text about. Several become one line you can name or leave.

Can I start my month on salary day?

Yes. Set the month start in Settings to any day from 1 to 28.

People and Plans

How do I keep track of who owes whom?

In People, add a line: who, how much, and what for. Settle it when it’s paid, or Forgive to close it without payment. Send a nudge opens WhatsApp or the share sheet with a short message you send yourself.

How do bills work?

In Plans, add a bill or pick a preset like Rent or Netflix. Mark paid logs the spend and moves a monthly bill to its next date. On Android you get a reminder the day before.

Android

Is the Android app out?

Not yet. It’s on its way to Google Play. To ask for early access, write to hello@anirudhgoel.xyz.

I said no to reading texts

That’s fine. Statements and adding things by hand still work. Android stops showing the question after two refusals, so Malai takes you to its system settings page if you change your mind.

A bank isn’t being read

A money text Malai isn’t sure about waits in a held list, and counts for nothing until you confirm it. In Settings, Request your bank shows you a sample with the details blanked out, then opens your own email app. Nothing goes automatically.

Your data

How do I back up?

In Settings, make a backup. You choose a password, and Malai saves one locked file that you keep wherever you like. Do this before you change phones.

How do I move to a new phone?

Make a backup on the old one, get the file across, then restore it in Settings on the new one. Without the password, nobody can open the file, us included.

Can I get my data out?

Yes. Settings has CSV and Excel exports of every transaction.

How do I delete everything?

Settings, then Delete everything. You type a confirmation and it’s gone from that device. Backups you saved stay where you put them.

Malai is open in another tab

Malai runs in one tab at a time to keep your data safe. Close the other tab, and this one opens by itself.
